How the bakery came to be.
From a failed cafe to a booming bakery.
My husband had talked me into opening a board game cafe because (a) he’s a nerd and (b) he got a decent lease on a space that had opened up around the corner from our bookstore during the COVID shutdown. I distinctly remember my answer being, “no way,” when he said, “You’re a good cook; you should open a cafe.” He signed the lease, and I found myself in uncharted territory. Despite the cafe having a following of patrons we came to know and love, we just couldn’t get that darn place to pull a profit after 3 years of trying. So we closed it in November 2024.
He got one thing right: I do know how to cook and bake. My goal was to figure out how to eliminate the things I hated doing and keep what I enjoyed.
I learned about Cottage Food baking and opened Crust and Crumb on my driveway in Feb 2025.
Every time we’re open, I get to say to my husband: “I love my job!” How many people get to say that on a daily basis? I feel lucky to get to do this. And I feel over-the-moon that so many have found us and made us a weekly routine.
Real food from a real kitchen for real neighbors.
